Social Media in the Workplace


We have had an increasing number of clients ask our opinion about the use of social media on company time. Not surprising when you consider that the use of social media among American adults has risen from around 5% in 2006 to 69% in 2016, according to a Pew Research Center study.

Facebook is probably the first thing that comes to mind when people hear the term social media. Or perhaps Twitter, Pinterest, or Instagram? And where would you draw the line? Internet forums can be considered social media but one could make the case that the ability to communicate with and ask questions of others within your industry can be beneficial.  You Tube can be a good resource for training materials, I have used it for that purpose. You can also find episodes of I Love Lucy and more versions of almost any song that you could ever possibly want. Allow it? Block it? What about wiki’s, LinkedIn, or Skype? All three are considered social media.

Further, is regulating the use of social media a function of HR, IT or both? We believe it is both.

An article published by the Society for Human Resource Management states “As with most technologies, there is no one-size-fits-all approach and no single right way for an organization to use social media applications. The benefits and drawbacks of social networking platforms vary based on platform type, features, industry and the organization itself.”

It is not our business to dictate whether a site is ‘business appropriate’ or not. It is our business to protect our client’s technology resources. Our goal is to partner with businesses to help them effectively apply technology to solve business problems. By working as a trusted advisor, we can help identify business processes or teams that may benefit from a service like our managed firewalls. In this case, we can help the HR team manage what they consider to be ‘business appropriate’ use of internet resources. Our network security reports can help the HR team identify what sites employees are visiting then use that info to define their own policy.
